US Club Soccer’s Free Virtual Education Week Targets the Whole Youth Soccer Community

US Club Soccer will offer a free, virtual Education Week from September 21–25, creating a no-cost learning opportunity for parents, coaches, players, referees, and club leaders across the youth-soccer landscape. Registration for all five sessions is available without payment and without apparent membership, club-affiliation, coaching-license, or other qualifying requirements—a notable point at a time when much soccer education and development programming can be expensive, selective, or directed primarily toward elite pathways.

Hosted by US Club Soccer’s Education & Development Department, the five-day series is designed to push beyond the narrow focus on winning, recruiting, and top-tier competition. Its topics range from goalkeeper development and player psychology to referee communication, World Cup tactics, and individual development plans that include parents as active participants in the development process. US Club Soccer says the programming is intended for coaches, clubs, parents, and players.

The structure makes the series relevant not just to academy or showcase families, but also to volunteer coaches, recreational-league parents, travel-team families, young referees, and administrators working to make everyday soccer environments healthier and more constructive.

Five Sessions, Broad Themes

Date Session Why it matters beyond elite soccer
Sept. 21 Shot Prevention: Developing Well-Rounded Goalkeepers Former U.S. women’s national-team goalkeeper Jill Loyden will discuss developing goalkeepers as complete players, not simply shot-stoppers. That is relevant for teams where goalkeeper training is limited or young players rotate through the position.
Sept. 22 Calm in the Chaos David Gerson will examine communication and de-escalation around bad calls, heated parents, frustrated players, and stressful decision-making. It speaks directly to sideline conduct, referee retention, and the emotional climate adults create for children.
Sept. 23 Incorporating Competitive Mental Frameworks into Your Coaching Practice Sport psychologist Dan Abrahams will focus on mental approaches to attention, intensity, intent, and competition—concepts that can be adapted for players at many ages and ability levels.
Sept. 24 The 2026 World Cup and Its Tactical Trends Felipe Cardenas and U.S. Soccer coach educator Ian Barker will discuss World Cup tactical trends and their relevance for grassroots coaching, along with U.S. Soccer’s post-World Cup youth-development initiatives.
Sept. 25 From Observation to Impact: Using Player Examination and IDPs to Develop Talent Ross Paule and Mirelle van Rijbroek will address player observation and Individual Development Plans, including how coaches, clubs, players, and parents can participate in development conversations.

“Calm in the Chaos” stands out

The September 22 session, “Calm in the Chaos,” may be the most important for the broad youth-soccer community because it turns the focus away from formations and results and toward behavior. US Club Soccer describes the realities of poor calls, heated parents, frustrated players, and split-second decisions—conditions familiar in community recreation leagues, local tournaments, and high-stakes travel games alike.

The session’s emphasis on clear communication and de-escalation is particularly relevant as youth soccer confronts persistent referee shortages and the challenge of retaining young officials. A league can add technical training or new competition formats, but a hostile game-day environment can undermine both development and participation. Parents and coaches have substantial influence over whether a child experiences soccer as a place to learn, compete, and recover from mistakes—or as a setting defined by adult anxiety and confrontation.
