Technical skills such as dribbling, passing, and shooting techniques more than American coaches, who often prioritize physical attributes like speed and athleticism.  European training also includes a strong focus on tactical decision-making and understanding the game, which helps players develop better positioning and decision-making skills.  They also tend to stress collective play, ball movement, and maintaining tactical discipline, contrasting with the more individualistic style often seen in American soccer.

European Academies:  In discussing our son’s pro ambitions with a couple of his coaches, who happened to be European, one said: “If you want to play pro, realize there are a lot more pro teams in Europe than the U.S., and you can make a living in the second and even third tiers of some countries”.Young American soccer players face several challenges when trying to join European pro clubs:

“Pay to play” soccer academies in Europe can be beneficial for young American players looking to enhance their skills. These academies provide high-quality training, exposure to European soccer culture, and opportunities to train with professional clubs, which can be invaluable for player development. However, the cost can be significant, with fees ranging from thousands of euros per season. While these programs offer excellent training environments, financial barriers may limit access for some players. Overall, they can be a good option for those who can afford it and are serious about pursuing a soccer career.
