Getting on the radar of the National Team (USMNT/USWNT)

Talented young soccer players can attract the attention of the USMNT or USWNT through several strategies such as joining reputable youth academies with connections to national team scouts (this can also lead to pro opportunities).  Look to compete in youth national teams, such as U15, U17, or U20, which are closely monitored by senior team selectors.  Youth national team camps play a crucial role in identifying future soccer stars by providing a structured environment for evaluation and development. These camps allow scouts and coaches to assess players’ skills, potential, and fit within the national team framework. The camps are part of a long-term talent identification process, where players are monitored over time to understand their development trajectory. This holistic approach ensures that players are evaluated not just on current performance but also on their potential to excel at higher levels.

Regional ID Camps are designed to identify and evaluate players at a more localized level, often serving as an initial step in the talent identification process. These camps provide opportunities for players to showcase their skills in front of regional coaches and scouts, who may recommend them for further evaluation.

In contrast, National Team Camps involve a more selective group of players who have been identified as top talents through regional or other scouting processes. These camps focus on integrating players into the national team setup and preparing them for international competition.

Most senior national team players also play pro in domestic leagues like MLS or NWSL, where they are scouted by the national teams.  Others play abroad, which can enhance skills and visibility.
