Here’s What It Means for Parents and Young Players
MetLife Foundation has announced a $1.7 million grant to the U.S. Soccer Foundation, targeted at fostering healthier futures for more than 220,000 young people and their families across six diverse communities in the U.S. This partnership isn’t just about financial support—it’s a catalyst for expanding access, mentorship, and safe spaces to play in under-resourced neighborhoods.
Why This Matters for Families
As U.S. Soccer Parent readers know, finding accessible, affordable development pathways isn’t always easy. Barriers like cost, travel, and lack of coaching support have long limited opportunities for kids—especially in disadvantaged communities. The MetLife/U.S. Soccer Foundation initiative directly tackles these challenges by:
- Training and equipping coaches and teachers as mentors—an essential step, given 16 million youth in the U.S. lack a reliable adult mentor.
 - Expanding “Soccer for Success” and Yes, Coach! programs in key cities: These evidence-based initiatives focus on holistic development, with coaches using soccer to promote not only skill growth but also physical and mental wellness.
 - Building six new mini-pitches (small, hard-court fields) to create safe places for play in cities like Dallas, Philadelphia, California, Georgia, New York, and New Jersey, serving as community hubs for ongoing activities and events.
 - Supporting community-led programming through “Just Ball” and involving MetLife employee volunteers, strengthening local engagement and sustainability.

The data shows the impact: 86% of youth with access to mini-pitches demonstrate positive behaviors, and 98% of residents feel their neighborhoods are safer—a powerful result for community well-being.
