United Soccer League (USL)
A Youth-to-Pro Soccer Pathway
The United Soccer League (USL) operates men’s and women’s professional, pre-professional, and youth soccer competitions. Its development model connects youth programs with senior teams, creating opportunities for players to progress toward college soccer, the professional game, or both.
Update, October 2026: USL unveiled a new "United for Soccer" brand identity on October 20, including new logos across its leagues and the first official mark for USL Premier, the top men's professional league launching in 2028. The new look rolls out across USL leagues and channels in 2027. The league structure on this page has not changed. Read USL's announcement.
How the USL Pathway Works
For parents, these simplified pathways show how USL’s youth, pre-professional, and professional platforms relate to one another.
- Boys/men’s pathway:
USL Youth → USL Academy → USL League Two → USL League One / USL Championship → (planned) USL Premier - Girls/women’s pathway:
USL Youth → USL Academy (Girls) → USL W League → Gainbridge Super League, formerly USL Super League
These platforms represent possible development opportunities, not a required sequence or guaranteed route to professional soccer. Players may enter at different stages, and the opportunities available depend on the club, its partnerships, and individual selection.

2028 Changes to USL Pro Tiers
Beginning in 2028, USL Premier will become the top level of a three-tier men's professional system, with the USL Championship and USL League One below it. Promotion and relegation will let clubs move between those divisions based on results.
USL has not yet named USL Premier's first clubs or released detailed promotion and relegation rules. The change applies to professional clubs, not youth teams. Pathway for Girls and Women
Parents of girls should know that USL has intentionally built a complete women’s pathway that mirrors the men’s side.
- USL Youth (girls): National competition platform and events for youth teams connected to USL clubs and partners.
- USL Academy Girls: High-level training and league play that connect youth development with USL W League and Gainbridge Super League clubs, depending on the participating club and its partnerships.
- USL W League: A national pre‑professional league where top college and youth players compete each summer and get scouted for professional contracts.
- Gainbridge Super League: A Division I women’s professional league at the top of USL’s women’s structure.
For your daughter, this means there is now a recognizable sequence of leagues to aspire to, even if she never leaves her home club’s broader ecosystem.
What This Means for Your Family
For many families, the biggest challenge is understanding which leagues matter and how they fit together. USL’s value is that it offers a single, connected pathway where a player can move from local youth teams into pre‑professional and professional environments with consistent standards and club support.
Most players will experience only part of this ladder, but knowing the structure helps parents ask better questions of their clubs, evaluate opportunities, and spot legitimate pathways versus pay‑to‑play promises.
