AYSO – American Youth Soccer Organization

A Guide for US Youth Soccer Parents

AYSO official Logo

The American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) provides community-based soccer programs built around participation, player development, and a positive family environment. Local programs, called Regions, rely on volunteers to coach, referee, and support the experience. Its Core program emphasizes balanced teams, open registration, and the Everyone Plays® philosophy, which means each player plays at least half of every game.ayso+1

For families exploring the levels of youth soccer competition, community soccer deserves to be viewed as a foundation, not simply the bottom of a pyramid. This guide explains AYSO’s approach, available programs, registration, and what to check with your local Region before joining.

What is AYSO?

Founded in 1964 in Torrance, California, the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) began with nine teams and grew into a national nonprofit soccer organization. Its mission centers on delivering youth soccer programs in a fun, family environment, guided by six philosophies that emphasize participation, fairness, positive coaching, and player development.

AYSO’s community-based programs are organized into local Regions, each led by a volunteer Regional Commissioner and board. Volunteers also serve as coaches, referees, and program organizers, making family and community involvement central to how AYSO operates.ayso

For parents, the local Region is the starting point for understanding the available programs, registration process, schedule, and volunteer opportunities. Think of AYSO as a national organization with shared principles, delivered through a local community program.

AYSO’s Mission and Core Philosophies

AYSO’s mission is to deliver quality youth soccer programs in a fun, family environment. Its six philosophies establish the principles behind that experience, from playing time and team formation to coaching and player development.

  • Everyone Plays®: Every player plays at least half of every game, giving children meaningful opportunities to learn through participation.

  • Balanced Teams: Teams are formed as evenly as possible to encourage fair competition and give players experience with different teammates.

  • Open Registration: The Core program welcomes eligible players through registration rather than elimination tryouts, including children who are new to soccer.

  • Positive Coaching: Coaches are expected to create an encouraging experience that recognizes effort, supports learning, and builds motivation.

  • Good Sportsmanship: Respect for teammates, opponents, coaches, and officials takes priority over a win-at-all-costs attitude.

  • Player Development: Players should have opportunities to develop their skills and understanding of soccer, both individually and as teammates.

These principles offer a useful way to understand the experience AYSO aims to provide. Ask your local Region how it puts them into practice, including team formation, coach preparation, and playing-time management.

AYSO Programs for Every Age and Ability

AYSO offers programs for young beginners, players seeking regular team soccer, and athletes who need an adaptive environment. Its offerings include Kickstart, Core, EPIC, additional competitive opportunities, and adult soccer (AYSO Kickstart, AYSO Core, AYSO EPIC, AYSO EXTRA, AYSO Adult Soccer). Check with your local Region to find out which programs and age divisions it offers.ayso+3

  • AYSO Kickstart: Designed for ages 3–6, Kickstart is AYSO’s new entry-level program, replacing Playground and Schoolyard Jamboree. It uses movement, playful activities, modified small-sided games, and a jamboree-style format to introduce children to soccer.

  • AYSO Core: AYSO’s primary grassroots program spans the 6U–19U divisions and serves the majority of its players. It combines age-appropriate soccer with the six philosophies, including balanced teams, open registration, and meaningful playing time. Use the current age chart and your Region’s registration information to confirm your child’s division.

  • AYSO EPIC: Formerly called VIP, EPIC stands for “Everyone Plays In our Community.” It provides an adaptive soccer experience for children and adults with disabilities, with additional support to help players participate and develop at their own pace.

  • Additional competitive opportunities: AYSO EXTRA offers a tryout-based program for players seeking a more competitive environment while retaining AYSO’s philosophies, including at least half-game playing time. Ask your Region whether EXTRA or other additional programs are available.

  • AYSO Adult Soccer: Adults can also find opportunities to stay active, enjoy soccer, and connect with their community through AYSO Adult Soccer. Ask about local availability, formats, and registration requirements.

Choose the program that matches the player’s readiness, interests, and support needs. Before registering, confirm the format, schedule, costs, and expectations rather than assuming every Region offers the same experience.

How AYSO Registration Works

Start with your local AYSO Region’s registration information. AYSO’s registration guidance directs families to its Region Locator, where you can enter your ZIP code to find nearby programs and contact details. Registration dates and playing seasons vary locally, so check the Region’s current schedule rather than assuming every program follows the same calendar.

For fall 2026, AYSO’s published age chart uses an August 1–July 31 school-year grouping. Use the official AYSO age-determination page and your Region’s registration information to confirm the appropriate division. The grouping is based on birth dates, not a child’s actual school grade, so it does not guarantee that all classmates will be placed together.

Before registering, confirm:

  • Program and division: Which program suits your child, and is the relevant age division available?

  • Dates and placement: When does registration close, and are there capacity limits or a waitlist?

  • Total cost: What is the complete price, and which charges are included or billed separately?

  • Uniforms and equipment: What does the Region supply, and what must families purchase?

  • Schedule and expectations: When and where are practices and games, and what volunteer support is requested?

  • Assistance and refunds: Is financial assistance available, and what happens if your child cannot participate?

AYSO states that registration costs differ by Region and support expenses such as insurance, equipment, uniforms, program development, and field rental. Request the local fee breakdown so you can understand the full commitment before paying.

Why Choose AYSO?

  • Inclusive and Welcoming: AYSO Core uses open registration rather than elimination tryouts, giving beginners and experienced players opportunities to participate. Its balanced-team approach and Everyone Plays® philosophy emphasize involvement and development rather than selecting only the strongest players.

  • Family and Community Focused: AYSO’s local Regions are built around volunteer involvement, with community members serving as coaches, referees, and organizers. The organization provides training to support volunteers in their roles, AYSO volunteer training). Ask your Region about opportunities that fit your interests and availability.

  • Emphasis on Fun and Development: AYSO’s Core program combines age-appropriate soccer with positive coaching, balanced teams, and at least half-game playing time for each player. The aim is to help children develop their skills and enjoy participating, rather than treating results as the only measure of success.

  • Safety First: AYSO’s Safe Haven® framework includes annual volunteer applications, background-check requirements, child-protection training, and role-specific preparation. Each Region must also designate a Child and Volunteer Protection Advocate to help implement these policies locally. Ask how your Region manages supervision, emergency procedures, and reporting concerns.

  • Positive Sidelines: AYSO’s Kids Zone® guidance promotes supportive cheering, respect for volunteer referees, and letting coaches coach rather than having spectators shout instructions. These expectations give families a practical role in creating a positive environment around the game.

AYSO vs. Other Youth Soccer Leagues

U10 AYSO Game

AYSO Core is a community-based soccer option built around open registration, balanced teams, positive coaching, and at least half-game playing time for each player. Those features provide a useful starting point when comparing it with other local soccer programs.

AYSO is not limited to one competition format. Its EXTRA program uses tryouts and offers a more competitive playing environment while retaining AYSO philosophies, including its playing-time commitment. Be clear about which AYSO program you are considering before comparing it with another recreational or competitive option.

For families, the most useful comparison is the actual experience: coaching, playing time, team selection, practice frequency, travel, total cost, and how the environment suits the child. Use our Levels of Competition guide for broader context, then compare the specific programs available locally.

A more selective team is not automatically a better developmental fit. Choose the setting where your child can participate meaningfully, receive appropriate support, and continue enjoying the game.

AYSO: A Community-Based Start in Soccer.

AYSO’s emphasis on participation, positive coaching, and community involvement can make it an appealing option for families exploring youth soccer. Its Core program is built around helping children play, develop their skills, and enjoy being part of a team.

The right fit still depends on your child and the local program. Look for welcoming coaches, clear communication, meaningful playing opportunities, and a commitment your family can comfortably manage. A positive soccer experience does not need to lead to a higher league to be worthwhile.

To explore your options, use the Region Locator referenced in AYSO’s registration guidance to connect with a nearby program. Ask about available age groups, schedules, costs, and ways to get involved, then choose the experience that best supports your child’s interest in the game.
