Can Your Child's Local League Now Lead to National 1?

National 1, the top team-based competition in US Club Soccer and US Youth Soccer, announced on Nov. 4 that it is inviting existing youth leagues to apply to become "N1 qualifying leagues," beginning with the 2027–28 season. Applications close Nov. 30. (National 1 League: https://national1league.org/national-1-league-invites-leagues-to-become-n1-qualifiers-for-2027-28-season/ )

What's new

In its first season, National 1 has worked through 34 districts, each run by a league or state association sanctioned by US Club Soccer or US Youth Soccer. To get in, a team had to apply to its district operator. Until now, a route up from local leagues was described only as "being developed."

This announcement is the first concrete version of that route. Leagues from any sanctioning body in youth soccer can apply, not only those under US Club Soccer and US Youth Soccer. Approved qualifying leagues would be part of a promotion and relegation system with the district operators.

Why National 1 says it's doing this

According to the league, qualifying leagues are meant to give more teams a path into National 1, extend its standards beyond the district operators, add events and talent identification opportunities within districts, and create promotion and relegation between operators and qualifying leagues. Commissioner Marc Frankland said the goal is "a clearer pathway for teams to progress based on merit" with more local competition and less unnecessary travel.

What isn't known yet

National 1 hasn't named any approved leagues. It also hasn't said how many teams could move up each season or exactly how promotion will work in each district. The 2026–27 season is unchanged.

What to ask your club

If your child plays in a local or state league, ask your club one question this month: is our league applying to become a National 1 qualifying league? If it is, ask what a team would need to do to move up. Winning a division doesn't guarantee a place.
